Recreational boat fishing
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Recreational boat fishing is a fun activity where people fish from boats on the water. It is different from commercial or artisanal fishing, which uses special boats and advanced tools like nets and traps. In recreational boat fishing, most people use simple tools like fishing rods.
Unlike fishing from the bank or shore, boat fishing lets people reach deeper waters farther from the coast. This means they can catch many different kinds of fish that live in those deeper areas. It is a popular way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time on the water.
Inshore
Inshore boat fishing is fishing from a boat close to land in water less than about 30 metres deep. Boats used can be sailboats, human-powered watercraft such as a dinghy, row boat, kayak or canoe, or light motorboats like a runabout, inflatable, fanboat or small cabin cruiser. These boats are usually small enough to be carried on a vehicle roof rack or towed on a boat trailer, making them more affordable than bigger fishing boats. They are often used in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, lagoons, estuaries and shallow seas inside bays. Recently, kayak fishing has become popular, especially on calm water.
Fishermen usually use a longer sea rod between 9 and 10 feet to cast from the boat, or a shorter rod between 6 and 8 feet. Lines are strong, usually between 18 pounds and 50 pounds depending on the fish. Reels are often multipliers, but fixed spool reels are also used. Baits are similar to those used from the beach or rock fishing but often larger because bigger fish are targeted. Fishers may catch many species, including bigger fish like conger eels and small sharks.
Offshore
Offshore boat fishing, also called deep sea or open water fishing, happens in deep water more than 30 meters or 98 feet away from land. It can be riskier than fishing in shallow water or lakes because boats face stronger currents and waves. This type of fishing needs more knowledge about weather, navigation, and safety, so it’s not for beginners.
Offshore boats are usually bigger than boats used near shore. They are built stronger and have more powerful engines to handle rough waters. These boats can be expensive, so many people choose to rent them instead of owning one. Offshore fishing often attracts those who enjoy luxury, with many charter boats offering comfortable and well-equipped trips. Big fish like marlin and tuna live in these deep waters, requiring strong fishing rods, thick lines, and special bait to catch.
