Regina Five

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

The Regina Five were a group of five artists who became famous for their bold, abstract paintings. The group included Kenneth Lochhead, Arthur McKay, Douglas Morton, Ted Godwin, and Ronald Bloore. In 1961, their work was shown in an exhibition called "Five Painters from Regina" at the National Gallery of Canada.

Before moving to Regina, Saskatchewan, the artists studied in Canada, the United States, and Europe. They brought new ideas to western Canada, mixing different styles of abstract art. Their paintings were different from what many people had seen before.

In 1958, Ronald Bloore, who worked at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, helped bring important art shows to the city. This helped people see how special the Regina Five’s work was. Their paintings showed up in a traveling show organized by the National Gallery of Canada in 1961, which helped them become well-known across the country.
