Regions of Madagascar
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Madagascar is a large island nation that is divided into 24 regions, called faritra. These regions are important because they help organize the country into smaller areas for government and community work. Even though these regions are part of six larger provinces, they play a key role in managing local affairs.
The way Madagascar is split into regions started in 2004 when 22 regions were created. Later, in 2021, one region called Vatovavy-Fitovinany was divided into two new regions: Fitovinany and Vatovavy. Most recently, in 2025, a new region named Ambatosoa was officially started after being created from part of the Analanjirofo region in 2023.
The size and number of people living in each region can be seen in a special list, using information from a big count of people done in 2018. This helps everyone understand how big each area is and how many people call it home.
Elections
The last elections for the regional councils took place on March 16, 2008.
