Rock-climbing equipment

Rock-climbing equipment changes depending on the type of climbing a person wants to do. For bouldering, climbers need the least gear: just climbing shoes, climbing chalk, and sometimes crash pads. In sport climbing, climbers add ropes, harnesses, belay devices, and quickdraws that connect to fixed bolts on the rock. Traditional climbing needs even more gear, including a set of removable protection devices that the climber carries. For longer climbs like multi-pitch climbing or big wall climbing, special tools help climbers move up and down fixed ropes. In aid climbing, unique tools help climbers move upward more easily.
Over time, new designs and ways to make climbing gear have changed the sport. Modern tools let climbers do things that used to need a lot of effort, but now can be done safely and with more control. For example, harnesses replaced tying ropes around the waist, and carabiners replaced many knots. Today’s gear includes dynamic ropes, special training tools, and strong spring-loaded camming devices. Materials like spectra/dyneema and aluminum alloys make equipment lighter and stronger. All climbing gear must meet strict safety rules set by groups like the UIAA, and each piece carries a mark to show it has been tested and is safe to use.
Use and certification
Type of climbing
The equipment you need for rock climbing depends on the type of climbing you are doing.
Free solo climbing and deep-water soloing need the least gear—just climbing shoes and chalk. Bouldering is similar but sometimes uses mats for safety. Top rope climbing and competition speed climbing add a rope, harness, and a belay device. Sport climbing and competition lead climbing add quickdraws that connect to fixed bolts on the rock. Traditional climbing needs more gear, including extra protection that the climber places during the climb. Multi-pitch climbing needs special devices for moving up and down ropes, and big wall climbing needs even more gear for carrying supplies. Rope solo climbing uses special devices for each part of the climb. Aid climbing uses extra tools like aiders and hammers.
Rock-climbing gear is considered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) help set safety rules for this equipment. In North America, there are fewer specific rules, so UIAA and CEN standards are very important. Most climbing gear is certified by UIAA and has a CE marking. After the United Kingdom left the European Union, it started using UKCA certification instead.
Ropes and slings
Ropes
Modern climbing ropes are long pieces of equipment, usually between 50 to 80 metres, used for climbing. They are made with a special design that helps them stretch when someone falls, keeping the climber safe. Some ropes are made to stretch more, while others are stronger and used for moving up or down safely.
Climbers can choose to use one thick rope or two thinner ropes together. Using two thinner ropes helps keep things balanced during longer climbs.
Slings
Climbers also use strong strips of material called webbing. These strips are sewn into loops and can be used in many ways, like wrapping around rocks or connecting different pieces of climbing gear.
Cords
Sometimes climbers tie smaller pieces of rope into loops to use for different climbing tasks. These loops can help climbers move along a fixed rope or balance forces between several anchor points.
Rope connectors
Modern climbers use special pieces of equipment to connect their ropes to other gear. These include carabiners, quickdraws, and harnesses. Carabiners are metal clips that help attach ropes to different devices. Harnesses tie the rope around the climber, and quickdraws connect ropes to fixed points on the rock.
Carabiners are strong metal clips that can hold a lot of weight. They come in different shapes and styles, some with locks for extra safety. Harnesses are made to hold the climber safely during a fall and come in many designs for different types of climbing. Quickdraws are short pieces of webbing with carabiners on each end, used to connect ropes to bolts or other fixed points on the rock.
Rope devices
Climbers use special tools to control the rope, move up, or move down. These tools help keep climbers safe, especially when the rope is wet or icy.
Ascenders help climbers move up a fixed rope with less effort. Belay devices control the rope to stop a fall easily. Descenders let climbers move down the rope safely. Some tools can lock the rope if there is a sudden movement, adding extra safety.
Protection devices
Rock climbing protection devices are used mainly in traditional climbing and sport climbing. They help climbers stay safe by providing anchor points on the rock.
Temporary protection devices are used to place anchor points where climbers can clip their rope. These devices can be active, like spring-loaded camming devices that adjust in the case of a fall, or passive, like nuts and hexes that stay in one place.
Fixed protection devices are permanent anchors on the rock, often used in sport climbing. These include bolts that are drilled into the rock and pitons that are hammered into cracks.
Aid equipment
Aid climbing uses special tools to help climbers move up the rock. Some of these tools include:
- Aiders are small ladders made of strong webbing. Climbers use them in pairs, standing on one while reaching for the next.
- Daisy chains are short pieces of webbing with many small loops. They help connect the climber's harness to the ladders.
- Copperheads are soft metal nuts that can be hammered into very narrow cracks. They are only used for slow, steady climbing.
- Hooks come in many shapes and are hung from cracks in the rock. Some special hooks can attach to old metal rivets in the rock.
- Rock climbing hammers are used to place metal spikes into the rock. Some types of aid climbing do not allow the use of hammers.
Clothing equipment
Rock climbers wear special clothes to stay safe and comfortable. Climbing shoes help their feet grip the rock better, and helmets protect their heads if something falls or if they slip. Belay glasses help the person holding the rope see better, and gloves protect their hands, especially on long climbs.
Miscellaneous equipment
Rock climbers sometimes use extra tools to help them. For example, they might use bouldering mats to protect themselves when they fall while bouldering. They also use climbing chalk to keep their hands dry, which helps them grip better.
Other tools include gear slings worn across the chest for longer climbs, guidebooks that show the details of climbing routes, and pulleys to carry heavy bags up big climbs. Knee pads help protect their knees, and medical tape can fix small skin injuries. Special tools like nut tools help get stuck climbing gear out of cracks, and portaledges are small platforms for resting during very long climbs. Wire brushes and toothbrushes are used to keep climbing holds clean.
Training equipment
Climbers use special tools to get stronger. Some tools help build arm and finger strength, like the Bachar ladder and campus board. Others, like the hangboard, focus on making fingers and arms stronger for climbing. There are also fun climbing walls like the Kilter Board and MoonBoard that have many different holds to practice on.
