Rock am Ring and Rock im Park are two big rock music festivals that happen at the same time every year in Germany. Rock am Ring started in 1985 and takes place at the Nürburgring race track near a village called Nürburg. The other festival, Rock im Park, happens about 200 miles away in a city named Nuremberg, at a place called Zeppelinfeld, which is also used for races.

These two festivals are often thought of as one big event because they usually have the same artists playing. Each artist performs one day at Nürburgring and the next day in Nuremberg over a three-day period. Together, they are some of the biggest music festivals in Germany and attract lots of people from all over the world. In 2007, more than 150,000 people attended both festivals, and tickets sold out early for the first time.

History

In 1985, a man named Marek Lieberberg started the Rock am Ring festival at the Nürburgring race track in Germany. The festival was meant to be a one-time event to celebrate a new, shorter race track, but it became so popular that it turned into an annual tradition.

Later, a second festival called Rock im Park began in Vienna and eventually moved to Nuremberg. Over the years, the Rock im Park festival has changed venues a few times, including moving to a stadium and then to the Zeppelinfeld area. In 2007, the Rock am Ring festival was used for a fun science experiment where people jumped at the same time to see what would happen if everyone in China jumped together. The result showed that nothing big would happen. After many years, the festival had to move to a new place for a couple of years before returning to the Nürburgring in 2017.

2008 festival

The 2008 festival happened from June 6 to June 8, 2008. There were 91 bands and musicians who were confirmed to play. Both festivals sold out on May 1.

Confirmed acts included 3 Doors Down, who replaced Chris Cornell because he decided to record an album instead. Other bands and artists were 36 Crazyfists, Against Me!, Airbourne, Alpha Galates, Alter Bridge, Animal Alpha, Babyshambles, Bad Religion, and many more.

2009 festival

In 2009, big rock bands like Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, and the Prodigy played at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park. Many other bands also performed, including Korn and Marilyn Manson. Tickets for Rock am Ring sold out very quickly, by March 26.

2011 festival

The 2011 festival had big names like System of a Down and Coldplay as the main acts. Many other popular bands played too, such as Disturbed, Alter Bridge, Rob Zombie, and Interpol, along with many more exciting performers.

2014 festival

The 2014 edition of Rock am Ring lasted for four days. Big names playing included Iron Maiden, Kings of Leon, Linkin Park, and Metallica. Many other bands also performed, such as Fall Out Boy, Ghost, Avenged Sevenfold, and The Offspring.

2015 festival

In 2015, the festival moved to a new location at Mendig Air Base. Some of the main bands that year were Foo Fighters, Die Toten Hosen, Slipknot, and Motionless in White. Many other popular bands also played, including A Day to Remember, Asking Alexandria, Bad Religion, Bastille, and Body Count with Ice-T.

2016 festival

The festival was stopped on the second day because of very bad thunderstorms.

2017 festival

In 2017, the festival took place again at the Nürburgring. The main performers were Rammstein, Die Toten Hosen, and System of a Down.

On the first night of the festival, an event with about 85,000 people had to stop early because of safety concerns. Some people were checked by police, but later it was found that there was no real danger. The festival continued the next day.

2018 festival

The 2018 festival happened again at the Nürburgring. Some of the top bands that played were Thirty Seconds to Mars, Muse, Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, Marilyn Manson, and Gorillaz.

2019 festival

The 2019 festival happened again at Nürburgring. The main performers were Tool, Slipknot, Die Ärzte, and Slayer. Out of the 77 performers, 36 percent were rock bands, including alternative rock, hard rock, and indie rock, and 29 percent were metal bands.

The festival started again after being stopped for two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It happened from June 3 to June 5 in 2022. Some of the top bands that played were Green Day, Muse, Deftones, Volbeat, Billy Talent, Korn, Weezer, The Offspring, Mastodon, and The Distillers.

2023 festival

The 2023 Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals took place from June 2 to June 4. Some of the main bands that played were Foo Fighters, Limp Bizkit, Rise Against, Kings of Leon, K.I.Z, Tenacious D, Die Toten Hosen, 5FDP, Bring Me the Horizon, and Machine Gun Kelly.

2024 festival

The 2024 Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals took place from June 7 to June 9. Some of the main bands playing were Die Ärzte, Avenged Sevenfold, QOTSA, Green Day, Broilers, Billy Talent, Måneskin, Parkway Drive, and Kraftklub.

2025 festival

The festival celebrated its 40th anniversary. It took place from June 6 to June 8 and welcomed 90,000 guests. There were 102 bands performing on four stages named Utopia, Mandora, Orbit, and Atmos.

The weather was mostly cloudy with heavy showers and strong winds. Some of the main performers included Korn, Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon, and Sleep Token. Other special guests also performed during the event.
