Rockin' at the Hops is the fourth studio album by rock and roll pioneer Chuck Berry, released in July 1960 on Chess Records, catalogue LP 1448. This album brought together some of Chuck Berry’s most exciting music, showing why he is such an important figure in rock and roll.

With the exception of four tracks—"Down the Road a Piece," "Confessin' the Blues," "Betty Jean," and "Driftin' Blues"—all the songs on this album had already been released as singles. These singles were very popular, and fans loved hearing them again on this full album.

Songs

The album Rockin' at the Hops by Chuck Berry had several songs released as singles before the album came out. The first single, released in September 1959, had "Childhood Sweetheart" on one side and "Broken Arrow" on the other. The second single, released in January 1960, featured "Let It Rock" and "Too Pooped to Pop". "Let It Rock" reached number 64 on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Too Pooped to Pop" reached number 42 on the Hot 100 and number 18 on the R&B Singles chart. The last two singles, released in May and August, were "Bye Bye Johnny" with "Worried Life Blues" and "I Got to Find My Baby" with "Mad Lad", but these did not make the charts.

Personnel

This album features many talented musicians. Chuck Berry provided the vocals and played the guitars. Other musicians included Matt "Guitar" Murphy on electric guitar for some tracks, Johnnie Johnson on piano, Willie Dixon on bass, and drummers Fred Below and Eddie Hardy. The Ecuadors provided backing vocals, and L. C. Davis played tenor saxophone on several songs.
