Salesforce Tower Chicago

Salesforce Tower Chicago, first called Wolf Point South Tower when it was being built, is a very tall building in downtown Chicago, Illinois, at a place called Wolf Point. It was built as part of a big plan that includes three tall buildings, and this one is the tallest and the last to be finished. The Kennedy family helped to own this building project.

Standing at 835 feet (or 255 meters) tall, the tower was designed by the architects Pelli Clarke Pelli. People finished building it in 2023, and now it serves as the main office for the software company Salesforce. Because it is so tall, it is a special and important part of Chicago’s skyline.

Background

In 2012, news reported that the Kennedy family planned to build three tall buildings at a place called Wolf Point in Chicago. The tallest of these would be the South Tower, standing about 900 feet high. Plans for these buildings were shared with the public later that year.

Location

The Salesforce Tower Chicago is built on a special piece of land in the River North neighborhood of Chicago. This land is near where three branches of the Chicago River meet, just southwest of the big Merchandise Mart building. The Kennedy family, who own this land, shared their plans for building the tower there. Around the same time, plans for another tall office building called River Point were also moving forward. A well-known architecture critic, Blair Kamin, thought the first plans needed some changes.

History

On October 30, 2012, new plans for the area were shown, but people did not like them, so the plans were taken back. Finally, the Chicago Plan Commission approved plans for three tall buildings in January 2013. These buildings would have homes, a hotel, and parking.

In 2018, Salesforce agreed to rent a big part of one building for many years and gave it its new name: Salesforce Tower Chicago. Even when problems happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic, building work started in 2020. The building was finally finished in 2023 and stands 835 feet (255 meters) tall.
