Same-sex marriage in Sinaloa

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Sinaloa since June 30, 2021. On June 12, 2021, a federal court told the Congress of Sinaloa to create a law allowing same-sex marriage by June 15. This was because the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation had already decided that same-sex marriage should be allowed everywhere in Mexico.

The Congress of Sinaloa voted to pass the law on June 15, and everyone agreed. The law was printed in the official state newspaper on June 29 and became active the next day. This made Sinaloa the 20th Mexican state to allow people of the same sex to get married, just like other couples. This change means many families in Sinaloa can now have the same rights and protections as any other family.

In 2013, the rules in Sinaloa were changed to only allow people of different genders to get married. Some people tried to challenge this change, but their efforts were not successful at first. Later, a judge allowed a same-sex couple to marry, but this decision was challenged and went to a higher court.

Over time, many courts said that the rules stopping same-sex marriage were unfair. By 2017, several couples had won the right to marry through these court decisions.

Legislative action

In 2016, a top court in Mexico said that Sinaloa’s ban on same-sex marriage was unfair. But state leaders did not change the law right away. In 2018, the same court gave Sinaloa more time to change its laws, but nothing happened. In 2019, lawmakers in Sinaloa voted against allowing same-sex marriage.

Finally, in June 2021, a federal court told the state to change its laws quickly. On June 15, 2021, the state’s lawmakers voted to allow same-sex marriage, and the new law started on June 30, 2021. The first same-sex marriage under this new law happened soon after in Culiacán.
