Santo Domingo Este
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Santo Domingo Este is a municipality and the capital of the Santo Domingo province in the Dominican Republic. It has one municipal district called San Luis.
Santo Domingo Este is located across the Ozama River, which splits the eastern and western parts of the Santo Domingo metro area. The eastern side, where Santo Domingo Este is found, is mainly a residential area and has fewer large shops and businesses compared to the western side. However, it has been growing slowly, with new shopping centers and stores being built.
History
Santo Domingo Este became its own municipality in 2001 through a law called Law 163-01. This law separated the Santo Domingo province from the Distrito Nacional.
Ideas about having its own local government started in the 1970s. In 1984, there was a plan to make a new province called Santo Domingo Oriental, but it was not allowed because it would have gone against the rules of the country.
Culture
Santo Domingo Este has many big shopping centers, like Mega Centro and Coral Mall, some of the largest in the country. You can also find busy places to eat and shops along Venezuela Avenue and St. Vincent de Paul.
The area includes a special housing complex called Villa Panamericana, which was built for athletes during the 2003 Pan American Games.
Economy
Santo Domingo Este has three special areas where people can buy and sell goods without paying certain taxes. These areas have many businesses and workers. One area, Hainamosa, has 11 businesses and 3,000 workers. Another, San Isidro, has 26 businesses and 7,470 workers. The third area, Los Mina, has just one business but 6,000 workers. There is also a big place for businesses called the New Isabela Industrial Park in the area.
Many well-known companies operate in Santo Domingo Este, including Barceló, Manufacturera Sociedad Industrial, Lácteos Dominicanos, Parmalat, Telever, Codetel, and Tricom. There are also companies that work in building, energy, and farming.
