Biography
Sara Simeoni was born in Rivoli Veronese, in the province of Verona. She started doing athletics, focusing on the high jump. Her first big competition was at the 1971 European Championships in Helsinki, where she finished ninth with a jump of 178 cm. Her first big win came at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where she won a silver medal with a jump of 1.91 m.
In August 1978, she set a new world record with a jump of 2.01 m in Brescia. Later that same month, she won the European title in Prague with the same jump. In 1980, she won a gold medal at the Olympics in Moscow with a jump of 1.97 m, setting a new Olympic record. She was the only woman from a non-Communist country to win a gold medal in athletics that year.
After facing some injuries, she competed in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, where she won a silver medal in a close competition. Sara Simeoni won many titles during her career, including two bronze medals at the European Championships and 25 national titles. She is known as one of the greatest female high jumpers ever. She is married to her coach Erminio Azzaro, and their son Roberto Azzaro is also a high jumper.
