Scripps Health is a nonprofit health care system based in San Diego, California. It includes five hospital campuses and 30 outpatient centers and clinics, treating more than 600,000 patients each year through 3,000 affiliated physicians. The system also works on clinical research and medical education.
The Scripps name started in 1924 when philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps created Scripps Memorial Hospital and the Scripps Metabolic Clinic in La Jolla, California. Scripps Mercy Hospital became part of the system in 1995. It was founded in 1890, making it San Diego's oldest hospital. Other facilities include Scripps Green Hospital, Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista, the Scripps Clinic, Scripps Coastal Medical Center, and the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute.
In 2002, Scripps Health changed its hospital buying agent from Novation to MedAssets because of issues with fees. Scripps believed this change would save $20 to $25 million each year on the $212 million it spent annually on supplies.
The company was ranked 100th by Forbes magazine on its 2024 list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For". This was because of the company's caring mission and high employee engagement marks.
History
Scripps Health started from the kind efforts of Ellen Browning Scripps to help improve health in San Diego. The idea began in 1917 when she helped build a new health center called the La Jolla Sanitarium because the old one was too small. This new center opened in 1918 and helped people stay healthy, even during a tough time with the Spanish flu.
Later, Scripps helped build an even bigger hospital called Scripps Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1924. Over the years, this hospital moved to a new location. In 1995, another important hospital called Mercy Hospital joined Scripps Health. Today, Scripps Health has grown to include many services like research and special care for serious illnesses. In 2020, Scripps Health also started working with another group to provide care for people at home in San Diego.
Major programs and centers
Scripps Health has many special programs to help patients. Some of these include a center for organ and cell transplantation, cancer care, and programs for weight management and robotic surgery. They also have centers for heart health, diabetes care, eye care, and more. These programs aim to provide top-quality care for different health needs.
Plans
Scripps Health has several projects in progress, including making the Scripps La Jolla and Encinitas campuses bigger to serve more people.
KGTV disclosures
Scripps Health is not connected to the San Diego television station KGTV, which is owned by a different company called the E. W. Scripps Company. KGTV often says on-air that it is not related to Scripps Health, except when doctors from Scripps Health are asked to share information about health topics in San Diego.
