Shin guard
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
A shin guard or shin pad is a piece of equipment worn on the front of an athlete's shin to help keep it safe from getting hurt. Many sports and activities use shin guards because they protect the shins during play. These include association football, baseball, ice hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, cricket, and mountain bike trials.
Shin guards are also important in combat sports and martial arts competitions. They are used in sports like kickboxing, mixed martial arts, taekwondo, karate, and professional wrestling. Sometimes the rules of the sport say players must wear them, and other times athletes choose to wear them to stay safe during their matches or games.
Materials
Modern shin guards are made from different synthetic materials. Some of these materials include:
- Fibreglass - This is stiff, strong, and lightweight.
- Foam rubber - This is very lightweight but not as strong as fibreglass.
- Polyurethane - This is heavy and strong, offering great protection from impacts.
- Plastic - This offers less protection compared to other materials.
- Metal - This is very protective but can be heavy and uncomfortable.
- Auxetic polymers - These are flexible non-Newtonian materials.
History
Shin guards were inspired by old armor called greaves, which protected the shin. The word "greave" comes from an old French word meaning shin or shin armor. People have used shin guards since ancient times. In ancient Greece and Rome, warriors wore shin guards made of bronze or other strong materials for protection in battle. One of the oldest known examples was found by an archaeologist and dates back to around 550/500 B.C. in a place now known as the Salento Peninsula in Italy.
Over time, shin guards changed from being used in battle to being used in sports. Cricket was the first sport to use shin guards, not for protection but to help players hit the ball better. Later, association football, or soccer, started using shin guards, thanks to a player named Sam Weller Widdowson in 1874. He adapted cricket shin pads for soccer. Today, shin guards are used in many sports to protect players' shins.
