Siegfried, Count of the Ardennes
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Siegfried, also known as Sigfried, lived around the year 922 until his death on October 28, 998. He was the count of a place called the Ardennes. Siegfried is most famous for building the first Castle of Luxembourg in the year 963. This castle became very important in history.
Because of Siegfried, many important leaders came from his family. They were known as the House of Luxembourg, or the House of Ardenne–Luxembourg. They ruled and protected the area for many years after him.
Siegfried also helped take care of special places called abbeys. These were important religious buildings like St. Maximin in Trier and Saint Willibrord in Echternach. Being an advocate meant he supported and protected these places. His work helped these abbeys stay safe and strong.

Siegfried came from an important family. His mother, Cunigunde, was related to King Louis the Stammerer of West Francia, and she was also a descendant of Charlemagne. His father was likely Count Palatine Wigeric of Lotharingia, who ruled a place called Lotharingia. Wigeric started the House of Ardennes, and his sons, including Siegfried, became leaders in different areas.
Siegfried started the House of Ardenne–Luxembourg, and his family later ruled Luxembourg. His brothers also started their own important families. One brother, Frederick I, Duke of Upper Lorraine, and another, Gozlin, Count of Bidgau and Methingau, began families that led to ruling places like the Duchy of Lorraine and the Duchy of Bar. Another brother, Adalbero I, became the Bishop of Metz.
Life
Siegfried was a nobleman who lived a long time ago. He was the youngest son and did not inherit much land from his father in the Duchy of Lorraine. Around the year 950, he became an advocate, or helper, for two important monasteries.
Siegfried wanted to grow his land and influence. He tried to take land near the Benedictine Abbey of Stavelot, but the abbot bought the land first. So, Siegfried looked elsewhere. He turned his attention to the Alzette valley. In the middle of the 10th century, he got a rocky hill called Lucilinburhuc and the right to use a nearby river. In 963, he built a strong fortress there, on top of the Bock rock. This place later became Luxembourg City, the start of what would become the County of Luxembourg.
Siegfried was also a loyal helper to the leaders of the Holy Roman Empire. He traveled with Emperor Otto I to Rome and sent soldiers to help Otto II fight in Italy and against West Francia. When Otto II died, Siegfried helped protect the empress. He was captured for a short time but later returned to his duties. When Siegfried died in 998, his son Henry I took over as count of Luxembourg.
Family and descendants
Around 950, Siegfried married Hedwig of Nordgau, the daughter of Eberhard IV of Nordgau. They had several children who played important roles in history. Their son Henry I of Luxembourg became the Duke of Bavaria and the second Count of Luxembourg. Another son, Frederick I, Count of Salm and Luxembourg, married into another noble family, and one of his sons later became the third Count of Luxembourg. Their daughter Cunigunda married Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor, showing the strong connections the family had with other important rulers of the time.
