Silent Wings Museum

The Silent Wings Museum is a special place in Lubbock, Texas that tells the story of brave pilots from World War II. These pilots flew gliders, which are airplanes without engines, to help carry troops and supplies behind enemy lines. Their work was very important during the war.

The museum is located in an old airport building from the 1950s and 1960s, which makes it a historic spot too. Visitors can learn about the exciting and dangerous missions these glider pilots flew and see artifacts from that time. It’s a great place for anyone interested in history and aviation to explore.

History

The Silent Wings Museum is found where World War II South Plains Army Air Field used to be. From 1942 to 1945, pilots were trained there to fly special gliders without engines. These quiet gliders could carry soldiers and supplies close to enemy lines without being heard.

The warm, dry weather and clear skies made Lubbock a great place for training pilots. In 1971, some of these pilots formed a group to keep their history alive. They wanted to find and restore an old glider for people to see. They found one in Fresno, California and brought it back to display.

The museum first opened in Terrell in 1984 but moved to Lubbock in 2001, where many of the pilots had trained. Today, the restored glider is a key part of the museum's exhibits.

Exhibits

The Silent Wings Museum has a special show called Silent Wings: The Story of the World War II Glider Program that lasts 15 minutes. After the show, visitors can see many interesting things like pictures and old items. One of the items is a fully restored WACO CG-4A glider and a TG-4 trainer. There is also a small model of a barracks from the Lubbock Army Air Field and a living exhibit where people can see the restoration of a British Horsa Glider.

Education and outreach

The Silent Wings Museum has many programs to help people learn. They can send speakers to schools and groups to share stories about World War II glider pilots. Inside the museum, there is a special library called the Adams Research Library. It has many books and records about the military glider program from World War II. People can make appointments to visit and do research there.
