Soil management is the way we take care of the soil to keep it healthy and useful. It includes actions like protecting the soil from damage, adding helpful substances to improve it, and making sure the soil stays in good condition. This is very important in farming, where soil helps plants grow. Whether farmers use natural methods or not, they need good soil management to keep their land productive for many years.
In organic farming, soil management is especially important because the health of the soil is the main way to give plants what they need and keep pests away. By taking good care of the soil, farmers can grow healthy crops without using many chemicals.
Soil management also helps with big problems like climate change. By improving how we manage soil, we can store more carbon, which helps reduce the amount of carbon in the air. Good soil management practices include better ways to add nutrients to the soil, farming without plowing the land too much, and using methods that help the soil recover and grow stronger. These steps are important for taking care of our planet.
Environmental impact
Farming methods can affect the air around us. When we use fertilizer, water plants too much, or turn over the soil, we can release a gas called nitrous oxide (N2O). This gas helps warm the Earth and can pollute the air. Animals like cows also release another gas, called methane emissions, when they eat and produce waste.
Soil can also help clean the air by storing a gas called carbon dioxide (CO2). Plants take in this gas and put it into the soil. When we change natural land into farms, we can release some of this stored gas back into the air. But certain farming ways, like not turning over the soil, leaving plant parts on the ground, and growing different crops each season, can help keep more of this gas stored away. These methods are used more often in organic farming.
Practices
Conventional farming focuses on large-scale operations to grow as much as possible. It often uses special chemicals to help crops grow and protect them from pests. However, there are better ways to care for the soil. Sustainable farming includes methods like conservation and organic farming, which aim to keep the soil healthy for many years.
Good soil management helps keep the soil strong and full of life. For example, planting cover crops protects the soil from being washed away by wind or rain. Rotating different types of crops helps keep the soil rich in nutrients. Adding organic matter, like compost, feeds the tiny living things in the soil and helps it stay healthy. Using fewer tools to dig up the soil also helps protect it.
