South Bay is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. It is the westernmost municipality in the South Florida metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, South Bay had a population of 4,860 people. The city is part of a larger area that includes many more people. In the regions around South Bay, within 25 miles, there are about 54,000 people, and within 50 miles, there are over 1.4 million people. This makes South Bay an important part of the busy South Florida area.
History
South Bay was named for its location on Lake Okeechobee. The town became official in 1941. The first leader of South Bay was a man named Aubrey, also called "Orb" Walker. He and his brother survived a big storm in 1928 by getting their family onto a boat in a canal.
Geography
South Bay is near the southern bank of Lake Okeechobee. The city covers an area of 3.7 square miles (9.6 km2), with 2.7 square miles (7.0 km2) of land and 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2) of water. The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail passes through the city.
Climate
South Bay has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The highest temperature ever recorded there was 98 °F (37 °C) in 2010 and 2016, and the coldest was 26 °F (-3 °C) in 2014. The area is in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 10a.

Transportation
Two major roads cross in South Bay. They are East-West State Road 80 and North-South U.S. 27. These roads help people travel in and out of the town.

Demographics
As of the 2020 census, South Bay had a population of 4,860 people. The median age was 36.6 years, with about 23.5% of residents under 18 and 9.2% aged 65 or older.
In 2000, the population was 3,859, with a population density of 1,425.4 people per square mile. The racial makeup was mainly Black or African American at 66.93%, followed by 12.5% White (non-Hispanic), 19.56% Hispanic or Latino, and smaller percentages of other groups.
