Southern Lebanon is a part of the country of Lebanon. It includes two areas called the South Governorate and the Nabatiye Governorate. These two areas were separated from the same larger area in the early 1990s.

Southern Lebanon

The main cities in Southern Lebanon are Sidon and Tyre along the coast. Other important places are Jezzine and Nabatiyeh further inland. Many people in Southern Lebanon follow the Shi'a Muslim tradition, but there are also Christians and other groups living there. Some villages, like Ain Ebel, Debel, Qaouzah, and Rmaich, are mainly Christian Maronite. The area has a rich mix of different cultures and histories.

History

Free Lebanon State and South Lebanon security belt

Southern Lebanon became the home of a place called the Free Lebanon State in 1979, led by a man named Saad Haddad. However, this state was not recognized by other countries, and things changed after Saad Haddad passed away in 1984.

Southern Lebanon has also been an important place in the conflicts between Israel and Lebanon.

Ahmadinejad's state visit

In October 2010, the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, visited Southern Lebanon. This was his first visit to Lebanon since becoming president in Tehran in 2005. Israel and the United States said this visit was causing trouble. Ahmadinejad was greeted by many supporters of Hezbollah, a group in Lebanon that is supported by Iran.

2026 Lebanon war

In March 2026, during the 2026 Lebanon war, Israel’s finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, said that after the war, Israel should take control of land up to the Litani River.

Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, said the military would keep control of a safe area up to the Litani River in Southern Lebanon until the danger from Hezbollah was gone.
