The Spiez Laboratory is an important institute in Switzerland that helps protect people from dangers like nuclear, biological, and chemical threats. It is part of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports and is located in the town of Spiez. This laboratory plays a key role in keeping communities safe.
Spiez Laboratory is one of only five labs in the whole world that has special approval from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. This means it is trusted to test and study ways to prevent and handle dangerous situations involving harmful chemicals. Tasks
The Spiez Laboratory works on many important tasks to keep people safe. It helps develop materials that protect against threats from nuclear, biological, and chemical sources. It also tests these materials to make sure they work well.
The lab studies biological agents and toxins to help diagnose and understand them. It also examines samples of chemical warfare agents and works to detect and detoxify them. Additionally, it measures radioactivity and tests the environment to ensure safety. The lab also gives advice on international negotiations about disarmament and arms control.
International activities
The Spiez Laboratory is known around the world and works with important groups like the United Nations (UN), the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the United Nations Environment Programme, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Trade Organization, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. It also helps with projects in the NATO program called "Partnership for Peace." The lab has about 100 staff members and can call on special equipment and personnel from the Swiss Armed Forces when needed.
In 2013, the lab helped analyze samples from the Syrian civil war for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. In 2021, the World Health Organization started a program called BioHub to help countries share information about viruses and prepare for future health emergencies.
