St. Gilgen, also known as Sankt Gilgen, is a peaceful village located by Lake Wolfgang in the Austrian state of Salzburg. It is part of the beautiful Salzkammergut region, famous for its lakes and mountains.
The village is a popular spot for visitors who enjoy calm lakes, green forests, and charming old buildings. People often come here to relax, go walking, or spend time on the water.

History
Sankt Gilgen was named after Saint Giles and was first written about in documents in 1376. In 1863, boats began moving across Lake Wolfgang, bringing more visitors to the small village. Then, in 1893, a railway called the Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn was built, which helped even more people come to enjoy the area. Wealthy people from Vienna, like the surgeon Theodor Billroth, began building summer homes there.
Geography
Sankt Gilgen is a village located on the north-western shore of Lake Wolfgangsee. It is close to the towns of Strobl and St. Wolfgang. The village has 3,784 people living there, sits 545 metres above sea level, and covers an area of 98.67 square kilometres.

St. Gilgen is a popular place for visitors. Boats leave from St. Gilgen to travel around Lake Wolfgang, offering beautiful views of the nearby mountains. You can also visit the old hermitage of St. Gilgen, hidden behind a chapel in the Falkenstein cliffs west of St. Wolfgang.
In 2005, St. Gilgen was called the "Mozart Village" by the Wolfgangsee Tourist Board. Although Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart never visited, his grandfather worked there, his mother was born there, and his sister Nannerl moved there after she got married. The town now has a well-known international school, the St. Gilgen International School. The Gut Aich Priory was founded in St. Gilgen in 1993.
Notable people
St. Gilgen is a special place where some well-known people lived or were born. Anna Maria Walburga Pertl, the mother of the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was from here. Other notable individuals include August Brunetti-Pisano, a composer, and Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk who teaches about peace and gratitude. The town was also once a summer home for Helmut Kohl, who was the chancellor of Germany.
