Stanford is a special place in the northwest corner of Santa Clara County, California, in the United States. It is named after Stanford University, one of the most famous universities in the world. In 2020, about 21,150 people lived in Stanford.

Most of Stanford University's campus is located within Stanford itself. However, some important parts like the Stanford University Medical Center, the Stanford Shopping Center, and the Stanford Research Park are actually in the nearby city of Palo Alto. The people who live in Stanford are mostly students, teachers, and families connected to the university.

Near Stanford, there is a neighborhood called College Terrace. Its streets are named after colleges and universities, but it is not part of Stanford. Instead, it belongs to Palo Alto.

Geography

Stanford is found at 37°25′21″N 122°9′55″W / 37.42250°N 122.16528°W / 37.42250; -122.16528. The area covers 2.80 square miles (7.3 km2), with 2.75 square miles (7.1 km2) being land and a small part, 0.045 square miles (0.12 km2), being water.

The weather here has warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Stanford has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, which means the summers are nice and dry but not too hot, and the winters are chilly with some rain.

2020 census

According to the 2020 census, Stanford had a population of 21,150. Most people were between 18 and 44 years old, with the median age being 25.8 years. Many people lived in shared housing, while some lived in families.

2010 census

The 2010 census recorded a population of 13,809 in Stanford. The community included people of many different backgrounds, and many lived in shared housing.

Income

In 2023, the median household income in Stanford was estimated to be $70,651. Some families and individuals lived below the poverty line.

Politics

Stanford leans strongly toward the Democratic Party, with about 54% of voters registered as Democrats and 15% as Republicans.

In the California State Legislature, Stanford is part of the 13th senatorial district, represented by Democrat Josh Becker, and the 23rd Assembly district, represented by Democrat Marc Berman.

In the United States House of Representatives, Stanford is located in California's 16th congressional district, represented by Democrat Sam Liccardo.

Education

The Stanford CDP is part of the Palo Alto Unified School District, which provides education for students from kindergarten to high school. Within Stanford, two of the district's schools operate: Escondido Elementary School and Lucille M. Nixon Elementary School.

There are also preschools in the area, such as the Bing Nursery School, which is run by Stanford University's School of Humanities and Sciences, and the Children's Center of the Stanford Community, a cooperative for parents and teachers.
