Statistics Austria

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

Statistics Austria, known locally as Statistik Austria, is the official name of Austria's Federal Statistical Office (German: Bundesanstalt Statistik Österreich). This agency is responsible for collecting and publishing official statistics related to Austria.

In 2000, a bill changed the name from the Österreichisches Statistisches Zentralamt to Statistik Austria. Statistik Austria is an independent institution with public rights. It provides important services like calculating the GDI (Gender-related Development Index). The current directors general are Gabriela Petrovic and Tobias Thomas.

Although Statistik Austria was officially recognized in 2000, the organization started much earlier, in 1829, as the 'Statistical Bureau'. Over time, it changed names several times. During the First Austrian Republic (German: Erste Republik Österreich) and after the Second World War, it was known as the Österreichisches Statistisches Zentralamt until 1999.
