Sumé (band)

Sumé was a Greenlandic rock band that helped start rock music in Greenland. The band was formed in 1972 by Malik Høegh and Per Berthelsen. Their first album, called Sumut, came out in 1973 and was very popular, with many people in Greenland buying it. This music became a big part of Greenland’s push for its own culture and independence from Denmark.

The band’s songs were inspired by American rock but sung in the Greenlandic language. They often talked about important topics and stood up against Danish control. In one of their famous songs, “Nunaqarfiit,” they sang about wanting to live as Inuit people instead of like Westerners.

Though the band stopped working together in 1977, they still play music sometimes. In 1994, they released another album called Persersume. In 2014, a movie about the band came out, titled Sumé: the sound of a revolution, directed by Inuk Silis Høegh.

Sumé released several albums during their time as a band. Their first album, Sumut, came out in 1973. They followed this with Inuit Nunaat in 1974 and Sume in 1977. Later collections include 1973-76 from 1988 and Persersume from 1994.
