The Supreme Council – Restoration Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania was the main governing body of Lithuania, chosen by the people in 1990. It began its work on March 10, 1990, and continued until November 11, 1992. During this time, it played a key role in helping Lithuania become an independent country again after many years under different rule.

This group of leaders worked together to make important decisions about the country's laws, government, and future. Their efforts helped shape modern Lithuania and its place in the world.

Powers

The Supreme Council of Lithuania had many important jobs. It could make and change the country's rules, call elections, and approve plans for the economy and budget. It was in charge of making sure laws were followed and could set up important government groups.

The Council also chose leaders for the courts and could listen to reports from other groups it had created. It had the power to remove leaders from jobs if they were not doing well and could make decisions about the country's safety and organization. It handled matters about international agreements and could create awards for citizens. It could also call votes for big decisions and cancel unfair rules made by other groups.

In March 1990, the Supreme Council of Lithuania adopted the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania, marking the country's independence. Shortly after, they declared that Soviet laws about military service no longer applied in Lithuania and took control of Soviet assets within the country. However, the Soviet government did not accept Lithuania's independence at first.

After a failed attempt to take control in the Soviet Union in 1991, the Soviet government finally recognized Lithuania's independence in September 1991 and ended an economic blockade.

By early 1992, the group that had most of the votes in parliament changed. This led to disagreements and separate meetings, causing problems for the parliament's work. In July 1992, they decided to hold new elections, which happened on October 25, 1992.
