A systems architect is an information and communications technology professional. They help create computer systems by deciding how the parts work together to meet specific needs. This includes breaking down the system into smaller pieces, figuring out how these pieces talk to each other, and choosing the right tools and technologies to build it.
The goal of a systems architect is to design systems that work well and can be easily changed or added to in the future. Because this job needs a lot of knowledge and experience, systems architects are usually very experienced technology experts. They need to understand not just computers, but also the areas where the system will be used. For example, someone designing an air traffic system should know a lot about how air traffic controllers and pilots do their jobs.
Being a systems architect is a more advanced role than being a systems engineer, software engineer, or programmer, even though their daily tasks can sometimes be similar. Systems architects focus on the big picture, making sure everything fits together well from the start.

Systems architects work with many people in an organization to learn about what is needed, what technologies can be used, and how the system will be built. They help decide the best way to design the system by looking at things like cost, time, and safety. Their decisions shape the system's main features, which are hard to change later.
In smaller systems, developers often decide the design themselves. But in bigger systems, a systems architect is needed to explain the overall plan to everyone, from users and sponsors to engineers. Very big and complicated systems might need several architects working together, with one chief architect overseeing everything. The architect’s job is to help both users and engineers understand each other, making sure the system can do what users need while following engineering rules.

As systems grow bigger and more complex, architects need to use general principles of design to make sure everything works well together. They make sure all the pieces fit together correctly and that the whole system matches what users imagined, especially how people will use it. They also help make sure the system can change if needs change during the project.

In many US states, there are rules about who can call themselves a "architect" when talking about building design. Only people with special licenses for building work can use that title for buildings.
In the UK, rules are different. People who work with computers and software can use the word "architect" without needing a special building license.
