Tamiami, Florida

Tamiami is a place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, in the United States. It is part of the big Miami area in South Florida. In the year 2020, when people counted how many lived there, there were 54,212 people in Tamiami. It is what is called a census-designated place, which means it is a community that is not a city or town but is still counted in the census.

Name

The name Tamiami comes from combining the words "Tampa" and "Miami". This happened because of a road called the Tamiami Trail, which passes through the Everglades and connects Tampa and Miami. People say the name "Tamiami" the same way they say the name of the road, "tammy-ammy".

Geography

Tamiami is a place located 14 miles west of downtown Miami. It is surrounded by other communities such as Sweetwater, Westchester, Westwood Lakes, and Kendale Lakes. A major road called U.S. Route 41, also known as the Tamiami Trail, runs through Tamiami and connects to Miami and even further to Naples. The area of Tamiami covers about 7.4 square miles, with a small part of it being water.

2020 census

According to the 2020 census, Tamiami had a population of 54,212 people. The average age was 47 years. About 16% of the residents were younger than 18, and 22% were 65 or older. For every 100 females, there were 89 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 86 males aged 18 and over.

All residents lived in urban areas. There were 17,234 homes, with 32% having children under 18 living in them. Most homes, about 52%, were led by married couples. About 12% had a male householder without a spouse, and 28% had a female householder without a spouse. Around 14% of homes were single individuals, and 8% had someone living alone who was 65 or older.

There were 17,620 places to live, with only 2% empty. The rate of empty homes owned by people was very low at 0.5%, while 3.2% of rented homes were empty.

2010 census

The 2010 United States census recorded 55,271 people, 16,288 homes, and 14,100 families living in Tamiami.

2000 census

In the year 2000, Tamiami had 54,788 people, 16,285 homes, and 14,233 families. The population density was 7,461 people per square mile. There were 16,707 places to live.

In 2000, most people, about 91%, identified as White, with many being of Hispanic or Latino background. Small groups identified as African American, Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, or from other races. Some people identified with more than one race.

About 42% of homes had children under 18 living in them. Most homes, around 66%, were led by married couples. About 16% had a female householder without a husband, and 13% were not families. Around 9% of homes were single individuals, and 4% had someone living alone who was 65 or older. The average number of people per home was 3.3, and the average family size was 3.5.

The ages of people were spread out, with 24% under 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 30% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 13% 65 or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 90 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 85 males.

In 2000, the average income for a home was $47,503, and for a family, it was $49,763. Men earned about $30,716 on average, while women earned about $26,426. The average income for each person was $17,601. About 8% of families and 9% of people lived below the poverty line, including 12% of those under 18 and 10% of those 65 or older.

In 2000, most people, about 92%, spoke Spanish as their first language, while about 7% spoke English as their main language.

Education

Miami-Dade County Public Schools operates public schools in Tamiami. Some of the elementary schools include Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary School, Greenglade Elementary School, Joe Hall Elementary School, Zora Neale Hurston Elementary School, Wesley Matthews Elementary School, and Village Green Elementary School. Middle schools include Paul W. Bell Middle School and W. R. Thomas Middle School.

Private schools in Tamiami include St. Kevin School, which opened in August 1980, and Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami also operates Catholic schools in the area.
