The Tamnava (Serbian Cyrillic: Тамнава) is a river located in western Serbia. It flows for about 90 kilometers, or 56 miles, before joining another river called the Kolubara River. Because of its importance, the area around the Tamnava is also named after the river and is known as the Tamnava region. This river helps shape the landscape and supports the communities living nearby.
Origin
The Tamnava River starts from small streams on the slopes of Vlašić mountain, near the town of Valjevo. It flows close to several villages, making sharp turns along its path. In its early course, the Tamnava helps form the border of the Pocerina region in western Serbia.
Tamnava region
The Tamnava region starts where the Tamnava River flows between the village of Subotica and the town of Koceljeva. Several villages such as Tamnava, Novaci, Kalinovac, Trlić, Sovljak, and Crvena Jabuka lie along the river. The river is joined by the Ub River near the village of Šarbane and eventually flows into the Kolubara River south of Obrenovac, a suburb of Belgrade.
This area is flat and stretches from west to east, including valleys of the Ub and Kladnica rivers. It is part of the southern Pannonian plain. The region has lots of coal, which is mined in the Tamnava coal mines, part of the larger Kolubara coal basin. The Tamnava River covers an area of 930 km2 and flows into the Black Sea through the Kolubara River. The name "Tamnava" means "the dark river" in Serbian.
