Ted-Jan Bloemen (born 16 August 1986) is a Dutch-Canadian long track speed skater. He began skating for the Canadian national team in the 2014–15 season, but he first represented the Netherlands in international competitions.

Bloemen mainly races in long-distance events and team pursuit races. He once held the world record for the 5,000 m with a time of 6:01.86, set in Salt Lake City. He also set an Olympic record for the 10,000 m with 12:39.77 when he won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

At those same Olympics in Pyeongchang, Bloemen won a silver medal in the 5,000 m, making him the first Canadian man to medal in that distance since 1932. He has also earned a silver medal in the 10,000 m and bronze and silver medals in the team pursuit at the World Speed Skating Championships.

Career

Ted-Jan Bloemen began skating in his hometown of Gouda at a young age. He first competed internationally at the 2006 World Junior Speed Skating Championships, finishing in fifth place. Over the years, he competed in many important races, including the Speed Skating World Cup, where he won a team event with the Dutch team.

In 2014, Bloemen moved to Canada to join the national speed skating team. In 2015, he helped Canada win a silver medal in a team event at the World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships. Later that year, he set a world record for the 10,000 metres, breaking the old record by more than five seconds. He also broke the world record for the 5,000 metres in 2017.

Bloemen competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Korea, where he won a silver medal in the 5,000 metres and a gold medal in the 10,000 metres. In 2020, he won gold in the 5000 metres at the World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships in Salt Lake City. He also competed in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milano Cortina.

Personal

Ted-Jan Bloemen's father, Gerhard-Jan Bloemen, is a retired doctor from Gouda. He was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, before his parents took him back to the Netherlands. Because of this, Bloemen also has dual Dutch-Canadian citizenship.
