Temple of Minerva Chalcidica

Map showing the location of the Temple of Minerva in ancient Rome.

The Temple of Minerva Chalcidica or Minervium was a small temple in the Campus Martius in ancient Rome, dedicated to the goddess Minerva. It was built by the famous leader Pompey the Great around 60 BC. The temple stood near where another important temple, the Temple of Isis and Serapis, was later built.

Unfortunately, the temple was probably destroyed in a big fire in 80 AD that affected the whole Campus Martius area. Many years later, the Roman emperor Domitian decided to rebuild it.

Even though the temple itself is gone, its name lives on today. In the 8th century, a beautiful basilica called Santa Maria sopra Minerva was built on the same spot, keeping the memory of Minerva's temple alive.
