The Tennessee Titans are a professional American football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The Titans play their home games at Nissan Stadium, and they will move to a new domed stadium with the same name in 2027.

Originally known as the Houston Oilers, the team was founded in 1959 by Bud Adams in Houston, Texas. They were part of the American Football League and later joined the NFL in 1970. The team won two AFL championships and four division titles during their time in Houston.

In 1997, the team moved to Nashville, first playing in Memphis and then in Nashville. They became the Tennessee Titans in 1999 when they moved into their new stadium. The Titans played in Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. Over the years, they have had many successful seasons, with players like Steve McNair, Eddie George, Chris Johnson, and Derrick Henry helping the team achieve great moments, including two players rushing for 2,000 yards in a single season.

History

Main articles: Houston Oilers and History of the Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans started as the Houston Oilers in 1959. They were part of a new football league and played in Houston, Texas. The team had some great moments early on, winning big games and making it to the championship several times. Over the years, the team moved to different stadiums and had many players come and go.

In 1995, the team moved from Houston to Tennessee. They played in Memphis for a short time before settling in Nashville. In 1998, they changed their name to the Tennessee Titans. In 1999, they had a great season and almost made it to the big championship game, the Super Bowl.

Through the years, the Titans had many ups and downs. They made the playoffs several times but also had seasons where they didnโ€™t do very well. In 2018, a new coach joined the team, and they started to do better again. They made it to a big game in 2019 but lost. After that, the team went through more changes with new players and coaches.

In recent years, the Titans have had some tough seasons. In 2024, they had a very hard time and finished near the bottom of the league. They are looking to build a stronger team for the future.

Logos and uniforms

The Tennessee Titans uniforms used from 2018 to 2025.

When the Tennessee Titans first started as the Houston Oilers in 1960, their logo showed an oil rig. This logo stayed mostly the same until the team became the Titans in 1999. The Oilers wore blue or white jerseys with red trim and white pants for many years.

In 1999, when the team became the Titans, they introduced a new logo with three stars and a large "T". Their uniforms now had white helmets, red trim, and either navy or white jerseys. Over the years, the Titans have used many different uniform combinations, including special throwback uniforms that remember their time as the Oilers. In 2018, they introduced new uniforms with navy blue, Titans blue, and white colors. Most recently, in 2026, the Titans showed off a new logo and uniforms that honor their history and colors.

Rivalries

The Tennessee Titans have several long-standing rivalries with other teams in the league. They share strong competition with their three division opponents: the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, and Indianapolis Colts. These rivalries have created many exciting moments over the years.

They also have historic rivalries with teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills. These matchups have produced some memorable games and moments in the team's history.

Culture

During the Tennessee Titans' first season in their new stadium, fans started calling the end zones the "Flame Pit" and wore flame-shaped headgear, known as "Flameheads". These costumes became popular in the early 2000s, especially when the team reached Super Bowl XXXIV. The flames connect to ancient stories where a giant named Prometheus gave fire to people.

The Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders perform at every home game and join the team's mascot, T-Rac, at events. T-Rac, a raccoon โ€” the state animal of Tennessee โ€” first appeared in 1999 and appears at all games and community events.

Every home game has special traditions. In the last part of the game, a video plays with a player shouting, "the pain train's coming!" followed by music. After the team earns a first down, fans all shout together, just like characters from an old movie.
