Threadfin butterflyfish
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The threadfin butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga) is a species of butterflyfish, which are tropical marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Chaetodontidae. These beautiful fish live in warm oceans across a wide area of the Indo-Pacific. They are known for their bright colors and unique shapes, making them popular among people who love sea creatures. Butterflyfish like the threadfin are important parts of coral reef ecosystems, helping to keep these underwater communities healthy and balanced.
Distribution
The threadfin butterflyfish is found in the Indo-Pacific region. It lives from the Red Sea and eastern Africa, all the way to the Hawaiian, Marquesas, and Ducie islands. It can be seen as far north as southern Japan and as far south as Lord Howe Island and Rapa Iti. These fish live at depths between 1 and 35 metres. In 2015, one was spotted in the western Mediterranean Sea near Italy, probably because someone released it from an aquarium.
Description
The threadfin butterflyfish, Chaetodon auriga, can grow up to 23 centimeters (9 inches) long. It has a white body with special markings called "chevrons" on its sides. One special feature is a black spot on the back fin with a thin, trailing line behind it, and a black band that runs across its eye. This fish also has a belly area with diagonal dark lines and bright yellow fins. There are two types sometimes recognized: one found in the Red Sea without the black spot on its back fin, and another found elsewhere that has this spot.
Taxonomy
The threadfin butterflyfish belongs to a large group called Rabdophorus, which some scientists think should be a separate category on its own. In this group, it is very closely related to the vagabond butterflyfish and the Indian vagabond butterflyfish. While these fish share a special pattern of lines, they look different in the colors of their back ends.
