This timeline of the history of Toronto shows important moments and events in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It covers many years, starting from the early-1600s up to today. The timeline includes events from different areas that are now part of Toronto, such as East York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and York.
Before the year 1998, when many of these areas joined together to form the city of Toronto, the name "Toronto" only referred to the original city area. This timeline helps us understand how Toronto grew and changed over time, showing both big and small moments that shaped the city we see today.
Pre-founding of Toronto
The history of Toronto goes back a long way before the city was officially founded. Early events in the area help tell the story of how Toronto came to be.

| 1720 | A magasin royal (fur trading post), known as Fort Douville, is established near the former site of Teiaiagon. | |

| 1791 | The lands of Etobicoke, York, and Scarborough are surveyed in preparation for settlement. | |
| 1792 | Joseph Bouchette is sent to Upper Canada to help survey the shores of Lake Ontario and produce maps. | |

| August 26 | York (Upper Canada) is incorporated as a township. | |
