Tuscany

Tuscany is a beautiful region in central Italy. It is the country's 9th most populous and 5th-largest region, with Florence as its capital and largest city. The area covers 22,987 square kilometers and is home to over 3.6 million people.
Tuscany is famous for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and amazing art. It is where the Italian Renaissance began, and many important artists and writers, like Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, and Giovanni Boccaccio, came from this region. Famous places such as the Uffizi and the Palazzo Pitti attract visitors from around the world.
The region is also well-known for its delicious wines, including Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. Popular tourist spots include Florence, Pisa, San Gimignano, Siena, and Lucca. Eight areas in Tuscany have been named World Heritage Sites, showing just how special this place is.
History

Apennine, Proto-Villanovan and Villanovan culture

Long ago, during the Bronze Age, people called the Apennine culture lived in Tuscany. They traded with faraway places like the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. Later, during the Iron Age, the Villanovan culture grew, leading to the early Etruscans.
Etruscans

The Etruscans were the first big civilization in Tuscany. They built roads, farms, mines, and beautiful art. Their area stretched between the Arno and Tiber rivers. The Romans later took over the Etruscans.
Romans
Soon after the Romans took over, they built cities like Lucca, Pisa, Siena, and Florence. They added new technologies such as roads, aqueducts, and sewers. But many of these buildings were lost to weather over time.
Medieval period

During the medieval times, pilgrims travelling to Rome brought wealth to Tuscany. This helped towns grow around churches and taverns. Tuscany had powerful cities like Arezzo, Florence, Lucca, Pisa, and Siena. Florence became very important during the Renaissance.

Tuscany, especially Florence, is where the Renaissance began. Florence grew by taking over nearby towns. The Medici family ruled Florence and helped make it a centre for art and learning.
Modern era

In the 16th century, the Medici family ruled all of Tuscany. Later, other families ruled until Tuscany became part of Italy. After World War II, Tuscany grew again as a cultural centre. Since 1970, it has been governed by centre-left leaders.
