Route description
US Route 202 in Pennsylvania is a highway that stretches for 59 miles (95 km) from the Delaware state line in Bethel Township, Delaware County, to the New Hope–Lambertville Toll Bridge over the Delaware River in Solebury Township. It passes through the western and northern suburbs of the Philadelphia area, offering a bypass around the city to avoid heavy traffic on Interstate 95.
The route begins in Delaware County, heading north through various townships and communities. It continues into Chester County, where it passes through more suburban and rural areas, including West Chester and its bypass. In Montgomery County, US 202 goes through King of Prussia and Norristown, connecting important local roads and areas. Finally, in Bucks County, the highway continues northeast, passing near Doylestown before crossing the Delaware River into New Jersey via the New Hope–Lambertville Toll Bridge.
History
The part of US 202 called Dekalb Pike was first built in 1848 as the Norristown, Bridgeport, and King of Prussia Turnpike. People started building it in 1853, and each share of the company cost $10. After 1885, the road became public and no longer charged tolls.
Before the U.S. highway system, this road was part of PA 29 from the Delaware border to West Chester, and PA 52 from West Chester to New Jersey. In 1926, it all became US 122, linking US 22 in New Jersey to US 13 in Delaware. Then, in 1934, US 122 was renamed US 202.
In 1964, plans started for a new highway called the Piedmont Expressway, meant to run alongside US 202. Construction began in 1965, creating a new road from West Chester to King of Prussia. This new road opened in sections between 1967 and 1971. Later, more parts of the highway were built, but some plans were stopped because of environmental worries and local opinions.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, many improvements were made to US 202 near King of Prussia, including widening roads and fixing interchanges. More projects to widen and improve US 202 happened over the next years, finishing in stages up to 2019.
In 2008, work started on a new parkway for US 202 between Montgomeryville and Doylestown. It opened in 2012 and included paths for walking. Some businesses lost customers when the road moved, so they asked for the old road to keep the US 202 name. This happened in 2015.
More recent projects have focused on widening US 202 in several areas, with the latest work expected to finish in 2027.
