U.S. Route 421 in North Carolina
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
U.S. Route 421 (US 421) is a major road that is part of the United States Numbered Highway System. It runs from Fort Fisher, North Carolina, all the way to Michigan City, Indiana. In North Carolina, the road travels about 328 miles (528 km) from Fort Fisher to the Tennessee state line near Zionville, North Carolina.
The road goes from the coastal plains to the Appalachian Mountains. It helps connect important cities such as Wilmington, Sanford, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Boone. Even though it is signed as running north–south, much of the road actually goes east–west, especially between Greensboro and the Tennessee border. Some parts of the road have been upgraded to freeway standards, especially between Sanford and North Wilkesboro.
US 421 was first established in 1931 between Greensboro and Boone, North Carolina, replacing North Carolina Highway 60. Over the years, the road was extended to reach both Fort Fisher and Tennessee. Today, most of the highway is part of the North Carolina Strategic Highway Corridors system. Because of this, many parts of the old two-lane road have been turned into a bigger freeway/expressway with four or more lanes. You can still find old parts of the road called "Old U.S. Route 421" along the entire route.
Route description
US 421 starts at a parking area near Pleasure Island. It quickly passes through a junction and reaches the Fort Fisher Ferry Terminal, where travelers can cross the Cape Fear River to Southport. Just after the ferry terminal is Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, the site of important historical battles.
The highway continues north through popular tourist spots like Kure Beach and Carolina Beach. It crosses the Cape Fear River and enters downtown Wilmington. From there, it heads west, sharing the road with other highways and moving through Brunswick County before returning to New Hanover County. It connects with Interstate 140 and continues toward Clinton.
North of Interstate 140, the road stays a wide four-lane highway for a while, then becomes a narrower two-lane road until it reaches Dunn. In Clinton, it bypasses the city on a freeway section. There is a rest area just north of Delway. The highway meets I-95 in Dunn and parallels I-40 for a distance.
After passing through Dunn and Erwin, US 421 becomes a wide four-lane highway again until it reaches Lillington. It crosses the Cape Fear River into downtown Lillington and then heads west toward Sanford. In Sanford, the highway now uses a bypass freeway instead of going through the city center.
From Sanford to near Siler City, US 421 is an expressway, bypassing several small towns. It then becomes a freeway, bypassing more towns, until it reaches the Greensboro Urban Loop. Near Pleasant Garden, it joins I-85 on the loop, then leaves to join I-40 heading toward Winston-Salem. In Winston-Salem, it uses Salem Parkway through the city center.
Continuing west, US 421 passes through towns like Yadkinville and Wilkesboro. Near North Wilkesboro, it passes close to a famous speedway and a special rest area. As it leaves Wilkesboro, the road starts to climb into higher elevations, leading toward the Blue Ridge Mountains. The highway provides access to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Deep Gap before continuing to Boone. Finally, it narrows to a two-lane road and heads toward the Tennessee state line, ending near Mountain City.
Designations
U.S. Route 421 shares paths with two special scenic roads in North Carolina: the Cape Fear Historic Byway in downtown Wilmington, and the U.S. 421 Scenic Byway between Deep Gap and Boone. Parts of two bicycle routes in North Carolina also follow U.S. 421. North Carolina Bicycle Route 5 runs together with U.S. 421 from its start at Fort Fisher up to near Snows Cut, passing through downtown Wilmington and ending near Montague, North Carolina and close to Coats. A small section of North Carolina Bicycle Route 3 also shares the road in downtown Wilmington.
History
US 421 started appearing on maps in 1931, running from Winston-Salem to Boone in North Carolina. It shared its path with another road called NC 60. Over the years, the highway was extended and rerouted many times. It grew from Winston-Salem down to Fort Fisher at the coast and up toward Tennessee.
The road was changed to make travel easier, with new paths around towns and better roads connecting places. Big projects helped make US 421 faster and more direct, like building freeways and new bridges. One major update happened in Winston-Salem between 2018 and 2020, where the road was rebuilt to improve travel for everyone.

Future
In September 2019, a group in Greensboro supported the idea of making part of US 421 an interstate highway. This would help traffic, especially for military and goods moving around, and provide extra escape routes in emergencies. It could also help grow the economy in certain areas.
Later, in November 2021, a new law suggested upgrading US 421 to become an interstate, possibly named I-685. This would improve roads from Greensboro to Sanford and create a new path to I-95. In June 2022, a group in Wilmington asked to extend this plan further south to their area, which could help connect people and places better, though there are concerns about how it would work with existing roads. So far, no final decisions have been made.
Other ideas include making another part of US 421 an interstate from Winston-Salem to Wilkesboro, and building a new road and bridge near Wilmington called the Cape Fear Skyway, though that project has faced delays and is not expected to start building until at least 2029.
Junction list
Note – Exit numbers west of Winston-Salem are aligned when US 421 went north around Greensboro in late-1980s/early-1990s. As a result, from realignments in Greensboro, the actual mileage vs. exit number mileage is off by an average of 3.5 miles (5.6 km).
