Upland and lowland

Upland and lowland are ways to describe areas of flat land depending on how high they are above the sea. These terms help scientists study the plants and animals that live near rivers and other freshwater habitats. Upland areas are higher up, while lowland areas are closer to sea level. This difference in height can affect the kinds of plants and animals that live there, making it important for understanding nature and how ecosystems work.

Definitions

Upland and lowland describe parts of a plain based on how high they are above the sea level. Lowlands are usually not higher than 200 metres, while uplands are between 200 and 500 metres tall. Sometimes, places like the Caspian Depression are even below sea level.

Upland areas often rise into valleys and mountains, making mountain ranges, while lowlands are usually flat. Upland rivers are cold, clear, and fast, while lowland rivers are warm, slow, and often have brown water from sediment and plants.

Scientists study rivers this way because upland and lowland rivers support different kinds of fish and tiny creatures, which is important in freshwater ecology.

Uplands

In the study of freshwater rivers, upland rivers and streams are the fast-moving rivers and streams that flow down from high or mountainous areas. These rivers often flow onto flat areas called alluvial plains, where they become lowland rivers. But height above sea level isn’t the only thing that decides if a river is upland or lowland. The speed at which the river drops in height and the force of the water are very important.

Rivers that drop quickly have faster water and more force. This creates features like a narrow, deep path, a river bed made of hard rock and rough sediments, areas where water rushes over rocks, and cooler temperatures. Rivers that drop more slowly have slower water and create winding paths with smooth sediments and warmer temperatures. Lowland rivers often carry more dirt and plant material, but sometimes they can be very clear during certain times of the year.

The clear, cool, fast water and rough river beds of upland rivers support fish that need cold water, lots of oxygen, and strong swimming ability. These rivers also support tiny animals that live among the rough sediments and need similar conditions.

The word “upland” is also used to describe areas that are not wetlands, where special plants grow.

Lowlands

Lowland rivers have warm, slow-moving water and fine sediment. This environment supports fish that can live in a range of temperatures and low oxygen levels. These fish also have special ways of living and breeding that fit this habitat. The same is true for small animals in lowland rivers, which also can handle changes in temperature and oxygen. They often live around fine sediments or in places like wood that has fallen into the water or certain water plants.

Lowland alluvial plains are formed when rivers carry sediment from highland areas and drop it in lowland areas over many years. Examples include the American Bottom, a flood plain of the Mississippi River in Southern Illinois, Bois Brule Bottom, and Bottomland hardwood forest, a type of forest found in lowland floodplains in the United States.
