History

Early years (1993–2004)

WHBQ-FM first began broadcasting in June 1993. It started with the call sign WAQK, which changed to WJOI a year later. In 1997, Flinn Broadcasting bought the station for $4.5 million. It tried a Top 40 music format, calling itself "107.5 KISS FM," inspired by a popular station in Los Angeles.

The station changed formats several times over the next few years, including a short period as "Wild 107-5" and then as "107 Oink Five, The Pig," before moving to another frequency in 2004.

In June 2004, the station returned to a Top 40 format and became "Q 107-5." In 2010, it expanded its reach by broadcasting on another frequency as well.

Classic hits (2020–2023)

On September 28, 2020, WHBQ-FM started playing Christmas music and then switched to a classic hits format, calling itself "107.5 WHBQ." It played a popular morning show during this time.

"Q" Redux (2023–present)

On April 27, 2023, the station went back to its Top 40 format and reused the "Q107.5" name. This left the Memphis area without a classic hits station for a while. The station kept its local team but dropped a morning show that had been syndicated. Shortly after, another station began competing with a similar name.

HD Radio

On August 30, 2019, WHBQ-FM started a new music channel on its HD2 subchannel. This channel played hits from the 1980s and was called "Z96.3". It also broadcast on a translator at 96.3 FM, which changed from an alternative music format called "I96".

On January 20, 2020, WHBQ-FM-HD2 and the translator returned to alternative rock, using the "I96" name again. Then, on January 22, 2021, at 3 p.m., the station changed to a Top 40/CHR format called "B96.3", starting with a song by Justin Bieber featuring Chance the Rapper.

On May 13, 2022, at noon, WHBQ-FM HD2 changed translators to one at 97.7 FM, replacing a classic hits format called "Guess-FM". The HD2 subchannel and translator at 96.3 now play a classic hip hop format called "Bumpin' 96.3".
