Warner Bros. is a famous brand name used by many big companies that make movies, TV shows, and music. It all started with a film studio called Warner Bros. Pictures, which was founded on April 4, 1923. This studio became one of the biggest and most important in America.
Today, a company called Warner Bros. Discovery owns the movies and TV shows made by the original studio. The music part, known as Warner Records, is now part of a different company called Warner Music Group and has been since 2004. Over time, some other parts of the original company were sold or spun off and no longer use the Warner name.
Historical overview
Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc. was started on April 4, 1923, by four brothers named Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner. They replaced their older company, Warner Features Company, which they had started in 1910. Over time, Jack Warner took control of the company alone in 1956. The company grew to make animated cartoons, television shows, and music.
Later, in 1967, a company called Seven Arts Productions joined with Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc. to become Warner Bros.-Seven Arts. Then in 1969, a bigger company called Kinney National Company bought Warner Bros.-Seven Arts along with other companies like National Periodical Publications, which later became DC Comics. After selling some of its non-entertainment parts, Kinney National Company changed its name to Warner Communications. In 1990, Warner Communications merged with Time Inc. to become Time Warner.
In the mid-2000s, Time Warner sold off some of its parts, such as Warner Music Group and Warner Books. The movie and television parts were brought together under a new group called Warner Bros. Entertainment in 2002. Finally, in 2018, Time Warner was bought by AT&T and renamed WarnerMedia. Later, in 2022, Discovery, Inc. bought WarnerMedia and created Warner Bros. Discovery.
