Wilmington University, also called WilmU, is a private university in the United States. Its main campus is located in New Castle County, Delaware, which is not inside an incorporated town or city. The university was started in 1968 by a teacher named Donald E. Ross. At that time, it was called Wilmington College. In 2007, the school changed its name to Wilmington University.
History
Wilmington University started in 1968 with a small group of students led by Donald Ross. Over the years, it grew a lot, especially when Audrey K. Doberstein was president. By 2006, more than 10,000 students were attending. In 2007, the school changed its name to Wilmington University to better show all the different programs it offered for students studying at the university level.
Campuses
The main campus of Wilmington University is in Wilmington Manor, a place in New Castle County, Delaware. The campus has important buildings like the Pratt Student Center and the Wilson Graduate Center. The university also has campuses in other towns in Delaware, such as Dover and Georgetown, and works with partner schools in New Jersey and Maryland.
Academics
Wilmington University has five colleges where students can study different subjects. The College of Professional and Continuing Education helps people learn new job skills. The College of Education and Liberal Arts prepares teachers and offers courses in math and liberal studies. The College of Business and Technology provides degrees in business and technology, with its business programs approved by a special group of experts. The College of Health Professions and Natural Sciences supports nurses and offers studies in health, environmental science, biology, and chemistry. The College of Social & Behavioral Sciences includes subjects like political science and counseling. As of March 2025, the School of Law is getting its official approval to operate.
Athletics

Wilmington University's sports teams are called the Wildcats. They play in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and belong to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The main sports center is in Bear, Delaware, where they play games like basketball, soccer, and lacrosse.
Notable alumni
Wilmington University has helped many people achieve great things. Some of its notable graduates include Anthony Allison, a professional soccer player, and Hugh T. Broomall, a major general in the United States Air Force. Others have served in government, such as Richard C. Cathcart, a former house majority leader in the Delaware House of Representatives, and Peter C. Schwartzkopf, the current speaker of the Delaware House of Representatives. The university also counts Bushra Gohar, a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan, among its alumni.
Notable faculty
Wilmington University has had some interesting and accomplished people teach there. Jennifer Cohan is the Secretary of the Delaware Department of Transportation. Henry Milligan is known as an actor, engineer, and professional boxer. Lem Burnham used to work for the National Football League (NFL) and played for the Philadelphia Eagles football team. He is now the vice president for the Philadelphia chapter of NFL Alumni.
