The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda was started by Karim al-Husseini, also known as Aga Khan IV, in 1967. It is located in Porto Cervo in Costa Smeralda on the island of Sardinia. The club offers many services for people who enjoy sailing and boating for fun.
In 1983, the club took part in the America's Cup competition with their boat named Azzurra in Newport, Rhode Island. They finished in third place. The next year, in 1984, the club hosted an important race for the World 12-Metre Class boats. Then, in 1987, they tried again to win the America's Cup, this time with a boat called Azzurra '87, near Fremantle, Western Australia. The club was selected by the Royal Perth Yacht Club to be the official challenger for that year's competition.
