Younger Dryas impact hypothesis
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Younger Dryas impact hypothesis is an idea that tries to explain a sudden cooling period on Earth about 12,900 years ago. This cooling period is called the Younger Dryas. The hypothesis suggests that a big event, like a comet hitting Earth, caused a huge amount of fresh water to flow into the ocean. This fresh water then changed the way the ocean moves, leading to colder temperatures.
However, most scientists do not support this idea. They have studied it for many years and found no strong evidence to back it up. Many experts in geology and other sciences have shown that the hypothesis does not fit with what we know about how the Earth works. Some people still believe in this idea, even though it is not accepted by most scientists.
This hypothesis became well-known through TV shows and books by authors who do not follow standard scientific methods. Some supporters of the idea think that scientists who disagree with it are hiding the truth. This makes the topic very controversial, especially for people who like stories about secret plots or ancient mysteries. A group called the Comet Research Group was formed to study this idea further, but some of their research has been proven wrong and taken back by science journals.

The idea that a space rock hit North America at the end of the last ice age began in the 1800s with a writer named Ignatius Donnelly. He thought this could explain strange dirt and rock patterns and even the end of a made-up ancient place called Atlantis.
The Younger Dryas impact hypothesis was introduced in 2007 by a scientist named Richard Firestone. He suggested that a space rock hit Earth around 12,900 years ago, causing big changes to the climate and affecting animals and ancient people. Many scientists did not agree with this idea. They said there was no solid proof and that the evidence did not make sense.
Scientists have tested many of the claims made by those who support this idea and found problems. For example, they could not find special tiny stones that were supposed to prove the impact. Other scientists also said that the space rock would not have caused the big changes that Firestone and his team talked about. Even some of the people who first supported the idea later changed their minds or stopped talking about it.
Public interest
The idea of the Younger Dryas impact has been shared in many TV shows on channels like the National Geographic Channel, History Channel, and NOVA. In 2024, The New York Times called it "The Comet Strike Theory That Just Won't Die." People sometimes believe this idea even though scientists do not support it. This happens because people often choose ideas that match what they already believe.
Author Graham Hancock wrote books saying a comet caused big changes long ago and linked it to old stories about floods. Other experts said his ideas were not correct. His beliefs were also shown in a Netflix series called Ancient Apocalypse. Some scientists said the series had ideas that were not based on real science. Different groups of people have different opinions about the series. The idea keeps getting attention because many people find it interesting, especially those who like stories about secret plans and rejecting expert opinions.
