Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League

The Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League is the top professional soccer division in Zimbabwe, organized by the Zimbabwe Football Association. It began in 1980, replacing an earlier league that started in 1962. Today, the league is sponsored by Delta Beverages and is called the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, named after their Castle Lager brand. This sponsorship has been in place since 2011 and is worth $3.6 million.

The league includes 18 teams that play a total of 34 matches each season, which runs from April to November. Most games happen on weekends, with some postponed matches played during the week. At the end of each season, four teams move down to a lower division, and four new teams move up.

The team that wins the league gets to compete in the CAF Champions League. The winner of the Cup of Zimbabwe can enter the CAF Confederation Cup, although sometimes they choose not to. The league winner also faces the winner of the Chibuku Cup in a special match called the Castle Challenge Cup at the start of the next season.

In Harare, you can find teams like Dynamos, Herentals, CAPS United, Scottland F.C., and Yadah. In Bulawayo, the main teams are Highlanders and Chicken Inn.

Sponsorship

Since 2011, the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League has been supported by Delta Beverages. They sponsor the league using their Castle Lager brand. In 2014, they increased their support to $3.6 million, and this support will continue until 2026.

Media coverage

The Premier Soccer League used to have a television agreement with SuperSport, which showed matches regularly across Africa.

In 2021, the league made a new agreement with ZTN (Zimpapers Television Network). They will show live Castle Lager PSL and Chibuku Super Cup matches on ZTN Prime, their newest free television network, and also on their social media platforms.

Lack of goalscoring

Since 2012, only three teams in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League have scored more than 50 goals in a season, even though the number of games increased from 30 to 34. This lower number of goals is thought to be because of poor field conditions, coaches focusing too much on defense, and not enough resources or modern training methods.
