Welcome to Abidjan
Abidjan is a big, busy city in Ivory Coast. It is the largest city in the country and is very important for business and trade. Even though Yamoussoukro is the official capital, Abidjan is often called the “economic capital” because it has many offices and foreign embassies.
A Growing City
Abidjan started as a small fishing village. It grew quickly after a new wharf was built in 1931. When the Vridi Canal was finished in 1951, Abidjan became an important sea port. The city kept growing even after Ivory Coast became independent from France in 1960.
