What Was Alchemy?
Alchemy was an old way of thinking about nature and science. People who practiced alchemy, called alchemists, lived in many places like China, India, the Muslim world, and Europe. They were very curious about how to change materials and make new things.
One big dream of alchemists was to turn simple metals, like lead, into valuable ones, like gold. They also wanted to find a special mix that could help people live longer or even cure sickness. This special mix was called an elixir of immortality.
Alchemists used many tools and made up secret symbols to write about their work. Their ideas were sometimes hard to understand because they mixed science with magic and old stories. Over time, some of their ways of doing things helped start real science, like chemistry and medicine.
Why Do We Remember Alchemy?
Alchemy is remembered because it was the start of many scientific ideas. People studied how to mix things and change them, which led to better ways to make medicines and understand the world. Even today, stories about alchemy appear in books and games because of its magical and mysterious feel.
Alchemy shows us how people long ago tried to learn about nature and make life better, using both science and imagination.
