What Is American English?
American English is the way people in the United States speak the English language. It is used in schools, government, and business all over the country. In most places, it is the main language people speak at home. American English is also used in many U.S. territories, except for Puerto Rico, where Spanish is more common.

American English has many special words and sounds. Some words come from Native American languages, like opossum, raccoon, and squash. Other words come from languages like Dutch and German, such as cookie and kindergarten.
