A beautiful ancient mosaic showing the Roman god Neptune and his wife Amphitrite, made over 2,000 years ago in Herculaneum, Italy.

Amphitrite was a lovely goddess of the sea in ancient Greek mythology. She was the partner of Poseidon, the god of the sea, and together they ruled the ocean and sea creatures.

Amphitrite was one of the 50 Nereid daughters of Nereus and Doris. Some stories say she was a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys. She was often shown as a beautiful woman with the tail of a fish, like a mermaid.

In many stories, Amphitrite helped show the beauty and mystery of the sea. People still love her today in art, stories, and even names for ships and places. Her name appears on stamps, in space, and on special statues.
