What Are Antibiotics?
Antibiotics are special kinds of medicines that help us fight tiny germs called bacteria. These little germs can sometimes make us sick. Antibiotics are like superheroes that stop the bacteria from growing or making us ill. Doctors use them when we have a bad cough, a sore throat, or other sicknesses caused by these tiny germs.
How Do Antibiotics Work?
Antibiotics work in many ways, but their main job is to stop bacteria from growing or to get rid of them. Some antibiotics are made by nature, like from a type of mold. Others are made in labs by scientists. They do not work against other kinds of germs, like those that cause the common cold or influenza. For those, doctors use different medicines called antiviral drugs.
A Little History
People have used antibiotics for a very long time, even before scientists knew about bacteria. Long ago, in places like Sudan, people drank special liquids from molds to feel better. The big change came in 1928 when a scientist named Alexander Fleming found a powerful medicine from mold. This medicine was called penicillin and helped many people stay healthy, especially during difficult times.
Why Are Antibiotics Important?
Antibiotics are very important because they help us get better when we are sick with bacteria. They are used to treat many different kinds of infections and to keep people safe before and after surgery. It is important to use antibiotics the right way, as told by our doctors, so they keep working well for everyone.
