What is an Atmosphere?

An atmosphere is a special layer of gases that surrounds a planet or a star. These gases are held close by the pull of gravity. Every planet in our Solar System has an atmosphere, except for Mercury.

The air around Earth is made mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. This mix helps plants, animals, and people live. Other planets have different mixes. For example, Venus and Mars have lots of carbon dioxide. The big planets like Jupiter and Saturn have thick air made of hydrogen and helium.

Why Do Planets Have Atmospheres?

Young planets often pull in nearby gas and dust when they form. This gives them their first atmosphere. The mix of gases can change over time. Warm sunlight and reactions with the ground can alter what’s in the air.

Strong gravity and cool temperatures help planets keep their atmospheres for a long time. Earth’s atmosphere is protected by a magnetic field, which shields it from tiny particles blowing from the Sun.

Fun Facts About Atmospheres

  • When you look up at the night sky, you see Earth’s atmosphere as a thin blue line from space.
  • Titan, a moon of Saturn, has its own thin atmosphere — the only moon in our solar system with one!
  • Stars also have atmospheres! These are the outer layers above the bright surface and glow with different colors.

Atmospheres are important because they help keep planets warm, protect them from the Sun, and allow life to grow. Without them, planets would be cold, dark, and empty.
