What is Biofuel?
Biofuel is a special kind of fuel made from plants or things from plants, like kitchen scraps or wood. It is different from fuels made from old rocks, like oil and coal. When we burn biofuel, it helps clean the air because the plants used to make it already took clean air while they were growing.
Biofuels can power cars and trucks, and they can also give us heat and electricity. Two common kinds are bioethanol and biodiesel. In the United States, many cars use bioethanol. In Europe, people often use biodiesel.
How Do We Make Biofuel?
We can make biofuel from many plant parts. For example, we can use crops like maize or sugarcane to make bioethanol. Biodiesel comes from oils in plants like canola or soybeans. Even old vegetable oil can be turned into fuel!
Scientists are also looking at tiny plants called algae to make fuel. Algae can grow in water and do not need land that we use to grow food. This could be a great way to make clean fuel.
Why Do People Use Biofuel?
Biofuels help us take care of our planet. When we burn them, they release air we breathe out, but the plants used to make the fuel already took that air in while they were growing. This helps keep our air clean.
Many countries use biofuels to help their cars and trucks run cleaner. For example, in Brazil, many cars can run on bioethanol instead of regular gasoline.
Fun Facts About Biofuel
- Biofuels can be made from things we already have, like kitchen scraps or wood pieces.
- Biodiesel can be used in diesel engines just like regular diesel fuel.
- Scientists are working hard to find new ways to make biofuels that do not need farmlands, so we can still grow food for everyone.
