What is a Bure?

A bure is a special kind of small wooden house from Fiji. Long ago, people in Fiji built bures using natural things like straw and wood from nearby. They made them by stacking pieces or tying them with rope.

Two Kinds of Houses

In old times, people in Fiji had two main types of houses. One type, called a vale, was where families lived together. The other was a bure, a special place for men who had gone through certain traditions. Both houses were dark inside because they had no windows and only one small door.

Bures Today

Now, in Fiji, the word "bure" is used to describe special hotel or resort buildings. These bures can be simple or very fancy, just like hotels in Europe or North America, depending on the resort.
