Campus Martius

The Campus Martius was a big open space in ancient Rome. Its name means "Field of Mars" in Latin. It covered about 2 square kilometres, a place where many important things happened long ago.

Today, a part of this old field is called Campo Marzio, and it is the IV rione of Rome. This area still reminds us of its history.

In very old times, the Campus Martius belonged to Rome’s last king, Tarquinius Superbus. After he was defeated, the field was dedicated to the god Mars. Roman men would gather there each spring before going to protect their land, and people held special festivals there.

Many wonderful buildings were added over time. One of the first stone theaters in Rome was built there by Pompey. Leaders like Julius Caesar and Augustus added more places for people to meet and vote. Famous spots like the Ara Pacis and the Pantheon also appeared there.

The Campus Martius was located north of the Capitoline Hill, outside the old city walls. It was often wet land near the river, with natural oak trees and marshes.

People celebrated many festivals there. One was a horse race called the second Equirria on March 14. Another was Anna Perenna, where people enjoyed feasts and drinks. The Tubilustrium festival also took place in this special field.

During the Middle Ages, the area became very busy. It was close to the Tiber River, which helped people trade and get water. Important roads like the Via Cassia passed through, linking Rome to Europe.

Today, the Campus Martius is part of modern Rome. Tall walls were built along the river to keep the area safe from flooding, helping protect the busy neighborhood.
